![]() ![]() The Yankees will naturally tell us they wouldn’t want or expect it any other way. Nothing has been easy for this group, and we now know for certain that nothing will be easy. Can Betances, Severino and Stanton all return in good enough shape to contribute? Can the Yankees avoid any more mishaps for the duration of the regular season, not to mention once they’re in the postseason? Do they have any more unknown heroes at their disposal? ![]() To do so, they’ll have to overcome the favored Astros, and every piece of bad news hurts that daunting challenge. From DJ LeMahieu to Gio Urshela to Tauchman to Mike Ford, these Yankees have produced more “Next Man Up” inspirations than the first 44 seasons of “Saturday Night Live.” Yet no one disputes that such joy will own the shelf life of a Red Sox general manager unless the Yankees at least reach the World Series. They’ve navigated that tightrope masterfully, their success despite the injury epidemic an amazing story. That we’ve got just over three weeks before the playoffs begin and the Yankees still have three vital players (Dellin Betances, Luis Severino and Stanton) working their way back from the injured list, with the two pitchers having missed the entire season to date and Stanton having clocked a mere nine games, tells you the tightrope on which the Yankees continue to walk. Just for completion’s sake, don’t forget Greg Bird hit a home run on Opening Day before vanishing, Troy Tulowitzki retired and Jacoby Ellsbury never even made it to “baseball activities” in Tampa. Then throw in Mike Tauchman, who helped cover for the extended absences of Hicks and Stanton. With Hicks and Miguel Andujar done for the season, that’s two envisioned regulars gone. It increases the onus on Gardner, who has enjoyed a renaissance at 36 but, because he’s 36, generates concerns of his tank running low. It takes away an outstanding defender from the middle of the diamond and, by forcing Brett Gardner to slide over from left field, weakens two positions, as Giancarlo Stanton and Cameron Maybin can’t match Gardner’s fielding prowess in the corner. The Hicks news, which became a fait accompli from the moment he tried to throw last week and still felt discomfort, stings especially when you consider its multiple ramifications: It removes the only switch hitter from the Yankees’ lineup. For the moment, however, let’s focus on the bigger picture and the shorter term: Hicks’ seven-year, $70 million contract is off to quite an inauspicious start - he played in just 59 games, between a serious back injury and this serious elbow condition - all the more so if the beginning to 2020 gets compromised by a TJ procedure. “The clock’s against him now,” manager Aaron Boone said. Regardless, Hicks’ 2019 has almost certainly concluded. Neal ElAttrache resulted in the decision to rest Hicks’ ailing right elbow for a few more weeks before feeling compelled to do something more drastic like Tommy John surgery. ![]() The bell tolled on that hope Wednesday with the news (broken by The Post’s Joel Sherman) that Aaron Hicks’ visit to Dodgers team physician Dr. As in there’s zero chance of it happening. To bring a convincingly healthy team into October? Zero. After being freed by April O'Neil, he escapes from a soldier of Krang's, but not before stealing a familiar toy palm tree. Like the TMNT, Slash's origin is changed to being part of a genetic experiment, with his being conducted by Stockgen. The newest version of the character appears in the rebooted IDW Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comics. Although he would decline to join the Turtles, he would go on to become an anti-hero of his own and actually led the show's version of the Mighty Mutanimals. He eventually turns on his new ally, siding with the Turtles when the heroic attributes that Raph believed in began to resonate within himself. The wayward turtle would team up with the Newtralizer against the Kraang but is at odds with the latter's outright villainous ways. His weapon was a mace, which was used in the toyline for the original Slash. This causes Raph to lash out at his former pet, who slinks off into the night. Renaming himself Slash, he unleashes unholy terror upon the Kraang aliens and the other Turtles, who he sees as holding Raph back. After being exposed to mutagen, he mutates into a gigantic spiked turtle and is more than willing to become Raphael's new partner. Spike constantly overhears Raphael's angry rants about his brothers' behavior and grows to hate them as much as he loves Raph. He would eventually return, however, in the CGI 2012 animated series, where he started off as Raphael's pet turtle Spike. Like many of the elements introduced to the franchise in the 1987 cartoon, Slash was notably absent in the 2003 series. Fitting the more one-dimensional, cartoony characterization of the show, this was the most outright villainous version of Slash. Slash's appearance is essentially an evil version of Donatello, and his bulkier frame is fitted with armor and swords that somewhat make him look like a pirate. Eventually, however, he becomes stuck in space, but Slash is perfectly fine with this, since the rocket that he's sent into space with has a small plastic tree. Slash is bigger and much stronger than the Turtles and is easily able to take them all on in a fight. His ensuing misadventures destroy the heroic turtles' reputation, leading to their facing each other. When his Binky is accidentally lost by Bebop and Rocksteady, he ventures to New York to search for it. This was especially the case if he were to lose track of his Binky, a toy tropical tree that was in his bowl before he was mutated. Perhaps as a result of their pouring too much of the mutagenic ooze on him, he was erratic, dim-witted, and prone to acts of violence. In "Slash - The Turtle from Dimension X," he was initially a pet owned by the Shredder's lackey Bebop, who was mutated to do menial tasks for him and Rocksteady. ~ Slash to Mikey before his death in the IDW comics. The first incarnation of the character appeared in 1989 in the fourth season of the original TMNT cartoon. But before I go, I want you to know, Mikey, you have always been-and will always be-my hero. However, he was found alive by Old Hob and teamed up with him, even forming a friendship with Michelangelo. ![]() In the IDW comic book, the character started out as an uncontrollable antagonist due to his transformation being incomplete because of a missing ingredient and was presumed dead after Leonardo struck what seemed like a lethal blow against him during their first encounter. He later turns into a good guy and later joins the Mighty mutanimals as a honorary member before sacrificing himself. Like many turtle villains he was altered from cartoon to comic, in both cartoons he is a mutated animal while in the Archie comics he is actually an alien who just happens to resemble an anthropomorphic turtle. ![]() ![]() Though Paige stuck around longer than some of her co-stars, her last official appearance is in the TV movie Degrassi Goes Hollywood, in which Paige scores (and then loses) a part in Jason Mewes’ film.Ĭollins is still acting and has appeared on the Kroll Show and Long Story, Short.Ĭlark starred as the bad boy (with a heart of gold!) Thorne in fact is strongest for the novice reader when dealing with the history of the physics community".Damian Davey (born Damian Gerard Baker 30 September 1964 – 12 February 2017), better known by the mononym Damian, was an English pop musician, best known for his 1989 hit " The Time Warp", a cover version of the original track from The Rocky Horror Show.ĭamian was briefly successful in the late 1980s. Of the book, The New York Times wrote, "the close and sometimes difficult reasoning it embodies is lightened by a deft, anecdotal approach, and by the author's whimsical drawings and diagrams." Kirkus Reviews opined that "the reader has to wade through many, many pages of theory and diagrams-obvious to the expert but too difficult for the lay reader. In addition to the main text, the book provides biographical summaries of the major scientists in the text, a chronology of key events in the history of black hole physics, a glossary of technical terms, twenty-three pages of notes, a bibliography, and alphabetical indices of subjects and people referred to in the text. The book features a foreword by Stephen Hawking and an introduction by Frederick Seitz. In the final chapter, Thorne delves into even more speculative matters relating to black hole physics, including the existence and nature of wormholes and time machines. The behavior of this space and the material which approaches it are not well understood, with a complete marriage of relativity and quantum physics yet to be achieved. ![]() ![]() By introducing quantum behavior to curved spacetime, several physicists have suggested that black holes do not possess a true mathematical singularity, but rather a region of chaotic space, in which time does not exist. Toward the end of the text, Thorne deals with the much more speculative question of the nature of the core of a black hole the so-called gravitational singularity predicted by Einstein's field equations. In the 1970s came Stephen Hawking's startling prediction of black hole evaporation, powered by quantum fluctuations near the event horizon. Thorne describes the much less mature search for gravitational waves, phenomena predicted to result from supernovae and black hole collisions, but as yet unobserved in 1993 (and, indeed, not directly observed until 2015, a discovery that led to Thorne being awarded a share of the 2017 Nobel Prize in Physics). In consultation with theoretical physicists, it became apparent that the only sensible explanation for these sources were extremely large black holes residing in the cores of galaxies, producing intense radiation as they fed and, in the case of quasars, blasting out incredibly powerful jets of material in opposite directions, heating the surrounding galactic gas until it glowed in radio frequencies. Proceeding separately from theoretical research into relativity, and with the refinement of radio astronomy, astrophysics began to produce unusual observations of extremely intense radio sources, which were apparently located outside of the Milky Way. When the reality of objects which possess an event horizon finally achieved broad acceptance, the stage was set for a thorough investigation into the properties of such objects, yielding the surprising result that black holes have no hair-that is, that their properties are entirely determined by their mass, spin rate, and electrical charge. Work by Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar suggested that collapsing stars beyond a certain mass cannot be supported by degeneracy pressure, but this result was challenged by the more prestigious Arthur Stanley Eddington, and was not fully accepted for several decades. Black holes were quickly recognized as a feasible solution of Einstein's field equations, but were rejected as physically implausible by most physicists. Over fourteen chapters, Thorne proceeds roughly chronologically, tracing first the crisis in Newtonian physics precipitated by the Michelson–Morley experiment, and the subsequent development of Einstein's theory of special relativity (given mathematical rigor in the form of Minkowski space), and later Einstein's incorporation of gravity into the framework of general relativity. It provides an illustrated overview of the history and development of black hole theory, from its roots in Newtonian mechanics until the early 1990s. ![]() Black Holes & Time Warps: Einstein's Outrageous Legacy is a 1994 popular science book by physicist Kip Thorne. ![]() ![]() ![]() A peculiar feature is the ability to pick up cats as an inventory item. ![]() In addition to cats and dogs, elephants are present these animals can be shot or set on fire-or simply annoyed by the player walking into them-causing them to trumpet with rage and attack anyone within stomping distance. Game characters live out their lives completely separate from the actions of Dude-walking around town, buying and selling merchandise, and even engaging in random shootouts with each other and the police. One of the major concepts of Postal 2 is that it is meant to be a "living world", a simulation of a tongue-in-cheek off-kilter town. Postal 2 then ends with a gunshot being heard, before being kicked to the end credits. Despite this, Postal Dude returns home to his trailer as normal, where he then gets into an argument with his wife, who demands that Postal Dude explain why he never picked up the " rocky road" she asked for at the beginning of the game. Cats begin to fall out of a darkly-colored sky, and almost everyone in town becomes heavily armed, with random gun battles breaking out in the streets. During the game, Postal Dude also encounters a marching band, a murderous toy mascot named Krotchy, the Paradise Police Department and its SWAT team, overzealous ATF agents, the National Guard, an eccentric religious cult, cannibalistic butcher shop workers, fanatical al-Qaeda terrorists, and former child actor Gary Coleman, among many others.īy Friday afternoon, the final day in the game, the apocalypse occurs and societal collapse soon follows, with all law and order breaking down. Throughout the course of the game, Postal Dude must put up with being provoked by other characters on a regular basis. It is possible, if occasionally difficult, to complete most tasks without engaging in battle, or at least, harming or killing other characters, as evidenced by the game's tagline: "Remember, it's only as violent as you are!" The daily tasks can be accomplished in any order the player desires, and the game also includes one task that is activated only when Postal Dude urinates, in which the player is tasked with getting treatment for gonorrhea after Postal Dude discovers he has the infection. The objective of Postal 2 is to finish all of the tasks throughout the week, and the player can accomplish these tasks in any way they wish, be it as peacefully and civilly as possible, or as violently and chaotically as possible. The game's levels are split into days of the week starting Monday and finishing Friday.Īt the beginning of each day, Postal Dude is given several tasks to accomplish, such as "get milk", " confess sins", and other seemingly mundane tasks. Postal Dude lives in a dilapidated caravan trailer on land behind a house in the small town of Paradise, Arizona, with his nagging wife, who is identified in the credits as simply "The Bitch". In Postal 2, the player takes on the role of the Postal Dude, a tall and thin red-headed man with a goatee, sunglasses, a black leather trench coat, and a T-shirt with a grey alien's face printed on it. The game was followed by a sequel, Postal III, in December 2011, and another, Postal 4: No Regerts in April 2022. The game received attention for its violent gameplay, and was responsible for multiple controversies. The game remains continually updated, with a new expansion pack titled Paradise Lost released in April 2015. ![]() The game has received several expansion packs, and in December 2003, a multiplayer expansion was released, titled Postal 2: Share the Pain.
